Paul Rand

Peretz Rosenbaum was born in 1914 in Brooklyn, NY. Rosenbaum would later change his name to Paul Rand, and become one of the most famous and influential graphic designers in history. He is best known for his logo design and corporate branding, creating timeless icons such as the IBM and ABC television logos. Paul Rand was an advocate of employing a wide variety of techniques such as typography, painting, collage, photography and montage to produce a distinctive and modern visual image poster, cooperate identity or magazine cover. He used movements such as Cubism, Expressionism and Bauhaus as inspiration for his own style.

Rand first made a name for himself as an editorial designer, doing work for magazines such as Esquire and Direction. Rand then focused on his passion for print design He even worked for free in some cases in turn for creative freedom, and as a result his style became known in the design community. Over the course of his career Rand has created some logos for some memorable brands such as NeXT and UPS. In the link below Paul Rand himself talks process, art and design in general. This video would taken before he sadly passed away.

Paul Rand took inspiration from various artists such as; Paul Klee, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Wassily Kadinsky, Le Corbusier, Walter Gropuis, Roger Fry, Alfred North Whitehead and John Dewey.

The following logos below are probably the ones Rand are most famous for todays society. Rands logos have always been pretty simple.
Paul Rand defined the IBM logo back in 1956. He modified it in 1960 and didnt create the striped version until the 1970s. I personally prefer the logo in colour rather than black and white when Rnad produced it. Again, It refers to me being a fan of colour and the way I work as an artist. The achromatic version is very bland and tbh the strriped makes it vrey difficult to focus on. Almost plays with the eyes with the use of positive and negative space. Paul Rand also designed packaging and marketing materials for IBM including the well known Eye-Bee-M poster which is featured below.

Rand later collaborated with Steve Jobs to create a cooperate identity for Next. Rand used a simple black box to highlight the companys name hence why he used vibrant colours for each individual letter. He also broke the companys name into two lines to create a more compact look.

"Dont try to be original, try to be good" - Paul Rand quote.

In a recent youtube video, Rand says that when it comes to creating a cooperate identity there is a various things to take into consdieration as an artist such as; order, variety, constrast, symmertry, tension and balance. Also, scale, texture, space, shape, light and most importantly colour.

Jess Whitehead

Jess Whitehead is a young Graphic Designer and Illustrator based in Port Elizabeth, South Africa. He is just 23 and he already have many interesting works in his portfolio. Most of these are great abstract experimentation. He specializes in photo illustration and digital art, typography and design. His style consists or creating and manipulating different forms, photographs and organic shapes into artworks with surreal and abstract vibe.

From what I can gather from Whitheads work is he tends to use vibrant complementary colours. Colours that work successfully well together but at the same time give that 80s vibe. Thats how i see it anyways. As a fan of colour, I am thoroughly attracted to his work.

Jess Whitehead uses digital painting to create her masterpieces. Digital Media is an emerging art form which traditional painting techniques (such as oil paints and watercolours) are applied by  means of a computer or a graphic tablet. In digital painting, the artist uses painting techniques to create the image directly onto the computer. Whitehead has an abstract vibe with the use of advanced photoshop. As well creating abstract pieces he has also designed graphic posters for musicians such as Scottish DJ Calvin Harris. As shown below.

Digital Media

Digital media

Digital Media is a form of electronic media where data is stored in digital form. Hard drives store information in binary form so are considered a physical form of digital media.  Digital media can be broken into different many categories such as digital video, digital audio and digital images/pictures. If referring to applications that provide access to digital media this includes services as: music-iTunes, electronic games-xbox live, playstation network, movies/tv-itunes and Netflix.

Digital video is a type of digital recording system that works by using a digital rather than an analogue video signal. Things such as digital video cameras would be used in this area. Both film and video are methods of recording moving images and sound. Anyone would use digital video whether its students who are studying television or film.

Digital data is a method of storing values in binary form. Binary is essentially the language of computers. If we want to use a computer to work with information from the real world (in our case sound) then this information must be presented in or converted to binary. All digital file formats store information in binary form, regardless of their type. Text documents, digital images and digital video files all contain information in binary. The file format that contains the binary and the way which the binary is encoded (stored) presents the binary data as a word processing document, a photo, a video and so on - usable files. This includes CDs as well as any sound files stored on a computer.

Many of us use digital media. Today we text, blog, shuffle, download and search in ways that even five years ago were unthinkable. New technologies are fundamentally altering in the way we are communicating with one another. Nowadays more people listen to mp3s or ipods than we cd players (which we all had years ago) Technology plays a huge part to our daily lives we use it to communicate via social networks. Facebook is a great example of digital media that we use to maintain our online friendships and keep track of whats going on with the world.
Many artists use digital media as a way to express their creativity or perhaps its a sense of media they specialize in. Graphic designers will use packages such as photoshop and illustrator to create their masterpieces.
